The Sea and the Route

Beneath the territorial story runs a maritime one that spans the whole period. This short interlude traces the monsoon routes and sea-lanes by which Europe first approached India and repeatedly returned to it — the ocean not merely as an early stage in the story, but as the continuing commercial and strategic frame through which the subcontinent was seen.
