The first sheet of Arrowsmith's three-sheet Map of the Province of Malabar — the northern portion of the detailed military survey, issued as a folding case map for use in the field.
Authorship and object
Sheet 1 of Aaron Arrowsmith's Map of the Province of Malabar, Drawn from Various Surveys (1809), the constituent northern sheet of the larger work, issued as a case map.
Survey detail, sheet by sheet
At full survey scale the province had to be divided across sheets; this northern sheet carries the same first-in-print topographic detail — settlements, routes, terrain — drawn from the post-Mysore-war surveys.
The gaze
Issued as a portable case map, it underlines the point of the whole enterprise: not a wall-decoration but a field instrument — the surveyed province folded into a form an officer or administrator could carry into the country it was made to govern.
